1. Jaw release and sigh

Why it works

The jaw is one of the primary muscles for threat assessment. Clenching and bracing the jaw is an instinctive preparation response — animals bite, and a locked jaw is a ready jaw. In chronic perfectionism, the jaw carries the vigilance that never fully resolves. Releasing it sends a direct signal to the nervous system: the threat is not here.   1. Sit comfortably. Notice where your jaw is right now — is it held, clenched, slightly forward?
  2. Open your mouth as wide as it will comfortably go. Let the lower jaw drop and hang.
  3. Hold that open position for 3–5 seconds, breathing gently through the open mouth.
  4. Take a breath in through the nose, then release a long, slow, audible sigh out through the mouth — the kind of sigh you’d make when you finally sit down after a long day.
  5. Let the jaw stay loose after the exhale. Don’t re-clench it. Repeat twice more.
  6. Finish by gently pressing the tongue to the roof of the mouth — this activates the palatal muscles and settles the jaw in a neutral, open-feeling position.

2. Imperfect movement

Why it works

Perfectionism extends into the motor system — the nervous system that controls how you move. Perfectionists often move carefully: measuring, correcting, holding back before committing. Imperfect movement deliberately breaks this loop. By shaking hands, rolling shoulders asymmetrically, and moving without correctness or grace, you are sending the cerebellum a “good enough” signal — motor output that does not need to be evaluated, corrected, or redone. This is a direct interrupt to the motor perfectionism cycle and, through it, to the broader threat-monitoring state.

  1. Stand or sit with enough space to move your arms freely.
  2. Begin shaking your hands loosely from the wrists — not in any particular rhythm, not trying to do it “right.”
  3. Roll one shoulder, then the other, in different directions. Let them be mismatched. Resist the urge to make the movement balanced.
  4. Nod your head slightly, wiggle your fingers, shift your weight from foot to foot — all at once if you like. Messy is the point.
  5. Continue for 30 seconds. The only rule is: do not correct yourself, and do not try to make it look good.
  6. Stop. Stand still for a moment. Notice how the body feels compared to when you started.

Neurologically: The cerebellum regulates both movement and the prediction systems that underpin perfectionism.   1. Sit or stand with good upright alignment. Let your arms rest naturally at your sides.
  2. Bring both hands behind your back and interlace the fingers, palms facing inward.
  3. Gently draw your hands downward and back, allowing your shoulder blades to squeeze together and your chest to lift and open toward the ceiling.
  4. Take a full breath in. Hold the breath and the position for 5 seconds — chest open, shoulders back, jaw soft.
  5. Release: let your hands drop, exhale slowly, and feel the chest settle. Notice the difference in the quality of the breath.
  6. Repeat twice more. After the third release, take a long slow exhale and let the body go completely soft for a moment.

Neurologically: Proprioceptors in the chest, shoulders, and upper back feed postural information to the nervous system’s threat-assessment centres. 4. Good enough anchor

Why it works

Interoception — the felt sense of the body from the inside — and vocalisation are both direct inputs to the ventral vagal state, the “safe and connected” branch of the autonomic nervous system. Placing the hands on the sternum activates interoceptive attention: you can feel the heartbeat, the warmth, the weight of the hands on the chest. Speaking the words aloud adds laryngeal vibration and resonance, both of which are vagal activators. The combination of felt body sensation and language creates a cross-modal “this is safe” signal that the nervous system registers as genuine — not a thought, but an experience.

  1. Pause whatever you are doing. Take one slow breath to arrive.
  2. Place both hands, one over the other, on the centre of your sternum — your breastbone, directly over your heart.
  3. Feel the warmth and the weight of your hands there. Notice your heartbeat if you can. Breathe into the contact.
  4. Say aloud, slowly and with your normal voice: “This is good enough.” Say it three times — not rushing, not perfunctorily. Mean it in your body, not just your head.
  5. After the third time, take a slow exhale. Let the hands stay on the chest for another breath or two.
  6. Notice whether the quality of the tension in the body has shifted.

Animals in the wild use this as the transition out of freeze and threat states — they orient, they look around, they confirm there is nothing dangerous in the immediate space. The nervous system reads this slow, investigative head movement as the “all clear” signal. It pauses the threat loop because the body is doing something incompatible with active threat detection.

  1. Sit comfortably and let your gaze go soft — not focused on anything, just resting.
  2. Very slowly, turn your head to the right. Let your eyes travel with it, moving naturally, without rushing.
  3. Pause briefly on anything that catches your attention — a colour, a texture, the quality of the light. You don’t need to identify or categorise it. Just land on it for a moment.
  4. Slowly return to centre, then continue the same slow turn to the left.
  5. Let the head movement be genuinely unhurried — the slowness is the signal. Speed is scanning for threat. Slowness is resting in safety.
  6. Do two or three full sweeps, left and right. Finish facing forward and take a slow exhale.
