Your autonomic nervous system (ANS) isn’t just the thing that makes you anxious. The nervous system states it describes aren’t abstract — they’re physiological modes your body moves between based on its assessment of safety.

The nervous system is stuck in high alert, and the inflammatory pathways stay switched on. 5 somatic practices for chronic illness
Capacity varies day to day — and sometimes hour to hour. These practices are titrated and gentle. They’re not an exercise programme. They’re small, bottom-up signals to a nervous system that has been running in survival mode, communicating: you can ease off a little now. Work with what you have on any given day, not what you had last Tuesday.
Supported rest with intention
This is different from collapsing onto the couch because you can’t do anything else. Deliberate, resourced rest — with a hand on your heart, a weighted blanket, or legs supported on pillows — sends a specific signal to the dorsal vagal system: this is chosen, not collapse. You’re not shut down; you’re resting with awareness. Even five minutes of intentional supported stillness, with gentle attention to your breath and your body’s contact with the surface beneath you, can begin to shift the nervous system from depletion into something closer to genuine restoration.
Physiological sigh
A double inhale through the nose — two sniffs in quick succession to fully inflate the lungs — followed by a long, slow exhale through the mouth. This isn’t distraction; it’s a neuroceptive safety update. Your nervous system is constantly scanning for threat below conscious awareness. Slow, deliberate visual orientation sends a subcortical signal — nothing dangerous here right now — that can interrupt the default threat loop. It’s particularly useful when you’re in dorsal vagal flatness and need to nudge the system gently upward without demanding energy you don’t have.
Humming or gentle chanting
Humming activates the vagus nerve directly through vibration — the vagus nerve runs through the throat, and the physical resonance of humming stimulates it. In nervous system terms, it’s about staying within the window of tolerance — the range in which your nervous system can function without going into sympathetic overdrive or dorsal vagal crash. The goal is to notice where your capacity ceiling is on a given day and stay below it — not as a sacrifice, but as a deliberate way of not sending your nervous system back into survival mode. On good days and bad days
Good days aren’t betrayals and they don’t mean you’ve been imagining things on the bad ones. They’re ventral vagal windows — moments where your nervous system has enough capacity to be present, connected, and functional. Bad days aren’t failure. They’re the nervous system doing its job in a genuinely difficult environment: one where threat signals are persistent, resources are limited, and the body has to make hard choices about where to spend its energy.
The goal isn’t linear recovery. It’s more ventral vagal windows over time — more moments of capacity, more ease between the hard stretches.
